about the farm

Sunray Community Farm is an in-development educational regenerative farm, nursery, and community space located at 411 Wemple Road in Glenmont, New York. We are in the earliest stages of layout, planning, and constructing the infrastructure needed for basic farming operations.

Our goal is not simply to produce food and plants, but to create a place where people can connect with the land and learn practical skills. We aim to help others create a more grounded relationship with agriculture and ecology. We believe healthy farms should nourish both people and the landscapes they inhabit, and we strive to give back more than we take.

Rather than relying on intensive industrial methods, we work within the rhythms of the land and the changing seasons. We recognize that every landscape has its own character, and with this comes particular opportunities and limitations; we hope to observe and learn, and most importantly collaborate with those natural processes whenever possible.

Our farming and nursery practices are guided by a commitment to ecological stewardship. We use no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. Instead, we focus on building healthy soils and supporting biodiversity. Our overarching goal is creating resilient growing systems that become healthier and more productive over time.

As for our nursery, we work to minimize waste wherever practical. Many of our plants are grown in biodegradable Fertilpots, which can be planted directly into the ground, reducing transplant shock and eliminating the need for plastic containers. For plants that are sold in reusable nursery pots, we offer a pot return credit program to encourage containers to be returned, reused, and kept out of the waste stream. Our overarching focus with our nursery is on perennial fruit and nut producing plants, along with select annuals, herbaceous perennials, and vegetables.

Whenever possible, we aim to create fertility on-site and within our network of regenerative land-based projects. Compost, cover crops, leaf mulch, wood chips, and the manure produced by chickens, rabbits, worms, and other farm animals all play a role in building healthy soil. By cycling nutrients locally, we reduce dependence on imported inputs and strengthen the long-term resilience of the farm.

As the farm develops, we hope to offer opportunities for learning through workshops, volunteer days, demonstrations, community events, and simple conversations around the farm stand. Whether someone is interested in growing a few herbs at home, planting a fruit or nut tree, starting a garden, or exploring regenerative agriculture more deeply, we hope Sunray Community Farm can serve as a welcoming place to begin.

We are less interested in maximizing production and more interested in cultivating healthy ecosystems, meaningful livelihoods, and a deeper connection between people and the land. While we grow food, flowers, and nursery plants for sale, we are equally interested in education, stewardship, and helping others gain the confidence to grow some of their own food and plants. We believe resilient communities are built not only by supporting local farms, but by sharing knowledge and skills, and welcoming others to participate.

At its heart, the farm is an ongoing experiment in stewardship, education, building true community, and cultivating a place where food, plants, people, and the more-than-human can thrive together.
